Not the version from the lodge terrace, or the one framed through a vehicle’s window, the version where the trail narrows, the dry-forest canopy opens up overhead, and the only sound is hoofbeats on packed earth. At Nekupe, horseback riding isn’t an amenity tacked onto the reserve. It’s one of the oldest ways to move through this land, and still one of the best.<\/p>\n
2,400 -acre private reserves don’t reveal themselves all at once. Some terrain is too dense for a vehicle, too far for an easy walk, too quiet for anything with an engine. A horse covers that distance at exactly the right pace: slow enough to notice a troop of howler monkeys, oropendolas nests, and dozens of native bird species naturally flowing throughout the reserve, quiet enough that the reserve’s wildlife barely registers you’re there.<\/p>\n
This isn’t a photo-op trot around a paddock. Nekupe’s riding program runs from short, easy loops for first-timers to longer half-day rides for guests who know their way around a horse. What stays consistent regardless of experience level: well-trained horses suited to the terrain, small groups, and guides who treat the ride as a chance to actually teach the land: what’s growing, what’s tracking through, what changes with the season.<\/p>\n
