Most properties that call themselves a “nature reserve” mean the land was left alone. Nekupe’s land wasn’t left alone. It was rebuilt.<\/p>\n

What the property actually started as<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before Nekupe existed, this stretch of Nicaragua’s Pacific countryside had been eroded by decades of agricultural use \u2014 land worked hard, then left depleted. The reserve didn’t inherit untouched wilderness. It inherited a restoration project.<\/p>\n

Nekupe’s founders worked with local ecologists and land stewards to identify native species and rebuild habitat that had been stripped out over generations. More than 100,000 trees have been planted since. The property is now home to over 158 plant species and a protected animal sanctuary \u2014 numbers that only mean something once you understand what the land looked like before any of it was there.<\/p>\n

A sanctuary, not a backdrop<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s easy for a luxury property to use wildlife as scenery \u2014 a few photos of birds, a line about biodiversity. Nekupe’s animal sanctuary works differently. It exists because the habitat was rebuilt specifically to support it, which means the wildlife on the property isn’t passing through for a photo. It’s living there.<\/p>\n

That distinction shapes how guests experience it. Ranger-guided explorations \u2014 during the day and at night \u2014 aren’t scheduled around when animals are convenient to find. They’re built around when the wildlife is actually active, which sometimes means guests are out well after dark, moving quietly through terrain that looks nothing like it did thirty years ago.<\/p>\n

Mombacho Volcano isn’t just a view from the property \u2014 its slopes and surrounding microclimates are part of what makes this particular stretch of land able to support the range of species it does. Forty kilometers of trails move guests through genuinely distinct habitats and microclimates, not a single uniform landscape dressed up to look varied.<\/p>\n
