The History Of Nicaragua’s Unmatched Rum

Nicaragua is known for its fantastic culture, landscapes, and of course, its rum industry. Being awarded for it many times, Ron Flor de Caña is a national pride. However, if you want to know more about it, you’re at the right place. Everything started in 1875 when Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa immigrated from Genoa, Italy, to Nicaragua.

In 1890, he established the San Antonio Mill, one of Nicaragua’s longest-running and largest sugar mills. Younger rums were concocted here to commemorate the annual cane harvest, while a small number of aged rums were created exclusively for mill administrators.

Founded in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, Compañia Licorera de Nicaragua (CLN) quickly established itself as a leading distilling operation for San Antonio – creating aged rum on a large scale. If you want to learn more, keep reading!

Single Estate Volcanic Rum

The outstanding Flor de Caña rum is a Single Estate-style produced entirely at Compañia Licorera de Nicaragua. From sourcing the raw materials to maturation and bottling – each stage of production happens here! Situated just five miles from the majestic San Cristobal volcano (the tallest and most active in Nicaragua), standing 5,725 feet high (1,745 meters), it’s easy to see why this place produces such an exquisite spirit.

The volcanic climate of San Cristobal has been a blessing for the land and water. The volcano’s 30 eruptions dating back to the 16th century have enriched soil with ash and minerals infiltrating underground reservoirs, transforming it into an oasis. Furthermore, this hot environment also contributes to aging rum as it interacts with oak barrels in ways not possible elsewhere.

Ingenio San Antonio, a company-owned sugar plantation in Chichigalpa, expertly grows and processes sugarcane into molasses. Tankers transport this sweet treat to the distillery for further enhancement. It’s diluted with water until just the right sweetness level is achieved. Then, during fermentation, which takes 36 hours, carbon dioxide emitted by the process will be collected and sold to Coca-Cola bottling plants!

Flor de Caña is still distilled multiple times in a steam-powered five-column, with the sugar mill’s biogas providing fuel. Depending on which columns are combined during distillation, each expression can achieve either lighter or heavier grades of rum. The column ensures that most of the flavor comes from maturation within barrels rather than from production alone.

Environmental Sustainability

As one of the most environmentally conscientious facilities in Latin America, if not all over the world, Flor de Caña Distillery proudly boasts ISO900 and ISO14000 certifications. These global management systems are bestowed upon companies that strive to reduce their carbon footprint while preserving air, water, and land integrity during production, which is something that Flor de Caña takes very seriously.

Nicaragua’s Tobacco History

Until 2019, Nicaragua proudly held the #1 spot for cigar production worldwide, with over 150 million handmade cigars produced yearly. Additionally, they overtook the Dominican Republic as the largest provider of premium cigars in America. This product’s greatness comes with history.

If you want to learn more about it, keep reading! Below, you can find the history of tobacco production in Nicaragua, facts about the country’s soil, and more.

Tobacco Production In Nicaragua

Before the Spanish conquistadors stepped into Nicaragua in 1519, the local natives had already been cultivating tobacco for years. This particular variety was known as Chilcagre tobacco – commonly referred to as ‘black tobacco.’

By the 1940s, Condega and Estelí became famous for their tobacco production. Virginia and Burley varieties of tobacco began appearing in this era, too, primarily as ingredients for making cigarettes.

After Cuban cigar families left their homeland in the late 1950s and migrated elsewhere, they began looking for a place to cultivate premium tobacco like back home. Thankfully, Nicaragua had perfect soil conditions to do so. With “The Habano Tobacco Program” running strong since 1963, the first plantings of Cuban seeds were established in Jalapa.

In 1968, Simón Comacho and Juan Francisco Bermejo established The Nicaraguan Cigar Company by partnering with Anastasio Somoza. Thanks to this partnership, they were able to acquire access to the fertile soil of Estelí, Condega, and Jalapa, as well as resources for processing tobacco in Central Estelí. This gave them all that was needed to produce quality cigars that would become a staple of the Nicaraguan culture over time.

Nicaraguan Soil

Nicaragua is the optimal environment for cultivating tobacco plants, boasting an atmosphere and soil resembling Cuba. Estelí, Condega, Jalapa, and – to a lesser degree – Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua are four areas where tobacco leaf production occurs with great success.

Nicaraguan tobacco is renowned for its solid and zesty flavors. To achieve a variety of Cuban and Connecticut seed tobaccos, the three remaining regions (Condega, Estelí, and Jalapa Valley) each cultivate distinct characteristics. Of these areas, Condega produces leaves with a thinner texture than Estelí’s but carries similar medium-strength sweetness; meanwhile, in nearby Honduras lies the Jalapa Valley, whose spicy aroma makes it an ideal wrapper choice.

Nicaraguan Folklore Dances: Everything You Need To Know

Nicaragua is a country known for its vibrant culture, especially when it comes to folklore dancing. Nicaraguan folklore dances reflect the country’s rich and diverse history, with influence from its European settlers, enslaved Africans, and indigenous populations.

However, how did they start, and what do they mean? Keep reading to find out! Below, we’ll go over the different Nicaraguan folklore dances, focus on the background, and more.

What Are Nicaragua’s Dance Traditions?

Nicaragua boasts a rich history of dance that began before Columbus discovered the Americas in pre-Columbian times. This form of expression was used to protest against oppression during colonial periods, with enslaved people communicating through their steps and staying connected to their native lands. As time progressed, so did dancing’s place within Nicaraguan culture, becoming ever more rooted in society.

The people of Nicaragua have crafted a unique culture by blending the contributions from Spanish, Indigenous, and Caribbean roots. Spain and its natives introduced el Güegüense; Palo De Mayo debuted in the Caribbean islands, and Baile de Los Zompopos traces back to Pre-Columbian times. Through traditional dance, one can observe the history woven into each step, embodying both reverence for past generations and an appreciation for cultural diversity!

Iconic Nicaraguan Dances You Need To Know

El Güegüense

One of the most widely-known literary works in Nicaragua and across Latin America, this awe-inspiring work of art combines Spanish and Indigenous theater, dance, and music to highlight disdain towards Nicaraguans during colonialism satirically. Originating from Diriamba city, its creator remains unknown despite being renowned worldwide. This captivating expression has been celebrated for confronting a difficult historical period with humor.

Historians believe El Güegüense might have been a wealthy merchant who rejected Spanish taxation. This great play is composed of fourteen characters: three mestizos, four Spanish authorities, and two women, as well as four animals of burden. Every character wears eye-catching costumes!

El Viejo Y La Vieja

In English, El Viejo y La Vieja, The Old Man, and The Old Lady is a timeless dance of Diriamba. This graceful but sluggish routine tells the story of an older man wearing a jacket, a long-sleeve shirt, and trousers; his look is completed with a hat donning colorful ribbons and a mask. To bring it all together, he exquisitely moves as he brings into play a cane for every step.

Palo De Mayo

The Palo De Mayo dance will awaken your senses and entice you with its history! A traditional Bluefields dance since the 17th century brings together several cultures from the South Caribbean Coast Region in Nicaragua, Belize, the Bay Islands of Honduras, and Bocas del Toro in Panama. To accompany this mesmerizing routine are bongo drums made of tree trunks and a washboard bass and percussion to create an unforgettable experience!

Baile De Los Zompopos

The Baile de Los Zompopos, or “Leave Cutter Ants” dance, commemorates the triumphant victory of a colony of leaf-cutting ants. This festive parade has been an ode to the Patron Saint of Altagracia since 1613 and was once used as a means of Indigenous people worshiping Quiateot—the God of harvest. As they sway in harmony to traditional music, participants hold sugar canes and tree branches high over their heads in celebration!
